Rider Road Safety Awards 2008 |
| Hi everyone just to let you know that there is a new addition to the Boundary events and that is Boundary 500 Motorcycle Group Road Safety Rider Awards 2008. The sponsor of this event is Simon Bailes. I have been very conscious of the fact that during our events and social ride-outs, we have a lot of riders clocking up a serious amount of mileage. As you are aware we now have running a very successful 'First on Scene First Aid Course’, the content tailored by ourselves and delivered by Cleveland Fire Brigade. In the last 3 months we now have over 40 riders who have been through the course which in effect means we now have additional motorcyclists on the roads of the north east that have received formal training in 'Scene Management' and 'Basic Life support Techniques' and the numbers are growing. The logical follow on from this is that we offer some kind of 'Riding Assessment, Development, Advice'. It is no secret that we are developing excellent relations between Cleveland Motorcycle Section and ourselves and for those that took part in the Santa Ride, they witnessed first hand their professionalism and support for our ventures. Police Motorcycle Section Officers are without doubt the highest trained experts within their field and when you look at Motorcycle organisations throughout the country without exception most of the literature produced is based on Roadcraft, The Police Riders Manual. I have liased with Sgt Nick Walker the officer in charge of the bike section and he and his officers are very enthusiastic in their support for this venture and the aims of The Boundary 500 Motorcycle Group. This event will consist of; There will be three categories of Rider; 1. Those that hold an Advanced Riding Certificate, 2. Those that hold a 'Full' motorcycle driving licence 3. Those that hold a 'Provisional' motorcycle driving licence. The Cleveland Police Motorcycle Section will deliver the practical road assessment, which is usually a half-day, which will then be followed by a theory paper. The answers are on the paper you will have to highlight the correct answer. The Police will be responsible for the marks awarded for the practical side and I will mark the theory paper. There is an entrance fee of £5 and if its a cheque then it is to be made payable to, The Boundary 500 Motorcycle Group. When you have booked your place please send the £5 to Brian Laverick 40 Pembroke Drive, Ingleby Barwick, Stockton-on-Tees. TS17 5BB. This money will go to The Great North Air Ambulance Service and Zoë’s Baby Hospice. The theory paper for the Advanced group contains twenty questions based on Roadcraft. For the 'Full' licence holder there will be ten questions on Roadcraft and ten questions on the Highway Code. The twenty questions for the Provisional licence holder will be ten on the Highway Code and ten from the DSA theory Test book. This initiative will run from Monday 24th March 2008 until Tuesday 30th September 2008. The awards will be presented at the Boundary 500 Presentation Evening at Hurworth Hall, Croft, Darlington, Co Durham on Saturday 4th October 2008. A number of you will now how Simon Bailes has been very supportive of The Boundary Group and he like myself and the Police are very keen to see this event succeed because no matter how long you have been riding we do not know it all. The winner of each category will receive a cheque for £150 and an event memento. The Runner-up of each category will receive a cheque for £75. The Cleveland Police Motorcycle Section who can be contacted on 01642 301574 or email Iain if you can not get an answer on the phone. When you ring up a mutual time and date will be agreed. Please bear in mind that the officers do have operational commitments as well. There is no doubt that when this event becomes common knowledge it will create a significant amount of interest so don't delay start reading up on the relevant books for your group and get your date sorted. Roadcraft, The Highway code and the DSA Theory Book are available from the likes of Smiths and Waterstones or from the Internet. When you think about it half a days riding, assessment, development and the chance to win some serious money for a fiver, cant be bad. Thanks for your support. Brian Laverick |

Boundary Marathon. |
| In addition to the Boundary 500 Challenge and The Boundary Classic there is to be an additional event starting in 2008. It will be called the Boundary Marathon which will consist of riding around the coasts of England, Scotland and Wales. The mileage covered will be just under 3000. The forms can now be downloaded. Riders can pick a date to suit but once they have started the ride has to be completed within 10 days. The start and finish point is the entrance to Durham and Tees Valley Airport. However the organiser upon application has the discretion to alter the start/finish point to ensure that those taking part and do not live in the North Of England do not have to incur excessive additional mileage to participate in the event. |

Lifesaver - From Cleveland Fire Brigade. |
| Cleveland Fire Brigades plan, is to carry out a home fire safety check in every home within Cleveland. Instead of just being reactive it aims to be pro-active in an effort to stop fire before it starts. Home fire safety checks are available to all households within Cleveland, and they only take 15 minutes, offering safety advice and a free smoke alarm. The alarms should last for 10 years. There are also alarms available for the hearing impaired, made up of a vibrating pad which is placed under the pillow, working in conjunction with a flashing light. The Brigades Safety Tips are; 1. Close all doors before going to bed. 2. Unplug electrical appliances when not in use. 3. Have a fire escape plan in case of fire. 4. Have a phone in your bedroom. To minimize the risk of fire DO NOT: 1. Leave pans unattended. 2. Leave matches and lighters unattended especially if small children are around. 3. Overload sockets. As a general rule use one plug for one socket. Cleveland Fire Brigade are there to help you. If you live in the Cleveland area and would like to arrange a free home safety check, call; 01429 874063 or log on to www.clevelandfire.gov.uk Thousands of home are now safer places to live as a result of these home visits.
